Finding The Best Gold Investment As A Safe Haven For Your Money

Skyrocketing demand for safe-haven assets like gold have caused large scale migrations away from riskier assets like stocks by investors looking to protect their hard earned wealth by finding the best gold investment possible. This comes as no surprise, especially since the metal has proven its ability to thrive time and time during troubling economic scenarios. Gold’s value has increased more than 400% in the past decade, thus investors continue flocking to this historically powerful safe-haven tool.

finding the best gold investment

Finding the best gold investment that suits your investing goals perfectly should be your main goal when purchasing gold bars and coins and the first step that you want to take is fully analyzing your portfolio in order to understand what products could be best for you. If you seek true security with your gold investment don’t settle for anything less than physical possession bars and coins for inside or outside retirement accounts. Gold stocks and Exchange Traded Funds hold several weaknesses that make them just as risky as traditional stocks, bonds and real estate.

The physical gold investment market can be separated into two distinct categories; modern bullion products and certified rare coins.

 1.    Modern bullion products

Products like the American Eagle and Johnson Matthey bars are useful for short-term profit because they hold very low premiums above the spot price of gold, usually around 5%-7%.  However the problem for investors is that the market deals in 400 ounce gold bars costing around $500,000 which can be expensive for a lot of people! A highly reputable gold bullion business called Bullion Vault, partly owned by the  World Gold Council and a member of the London Bullion Market Association, has solved this problem. Here investors can choose to buy part of a good delivery gold bullion bar, or even a whole bar if they so wish which makes gold bullion investing much more affordable for many.

 2.    Certified rare coins.

Coins like the $20 Saint Gaudens and $20 Lady Liberties are useful for long-term wealth preservation because their numismatic attributes help them maintain value over the years while at the same time increasing in value when the spot price increases. While some coins can be purchased in circulated condition for a small premium over the bullion spot price investors should be prepared to pay a very high premium for coins in superb condition. Care should be exercised in only dealing with reputable coin dealers to avoid paying grossly inflated prices.

Whichever product you decide on you will find that your gold investment will produce good returns for you in the long term as part of a well balanced and diverse investment portfolio.

Finding Gold Nuggets In Australia State By State

Despite the fact that a lot of gold was found both by prospectors and mining companies in Australia in the latter part of the 19th century with large goldfields discovered rivaling those found in the USA there is still a lot of gold that can be found there today. In fact it is estimated that $150 million dollars worth of gold is being discovered here using metal detectors each year! The reason for this s quite simple due to the fact that the Australian goldfields cover huge, often remote, land areas in each State and modern technology has improved the chances of finding gold nuggets in Australia missed by the old prospectors. Part time prospectors and hobbyists, estimated to currently number 20,000,  are still unearthing some very nice gold nuggets out in the wilderness using metal detectors, pans and other types of gold finding equipment. Here is a example of one huge nugget recently found near Ballarat in Victoria weighing 177 ounces and  worth over $300,000!

finding gold nuggets in Australia There is a good reason why so many people are taking up gold prospecting as a part time hobby for finding gold nuggets in Australia. Over the last decade gold has steadily increased in value and is now valued at over $1600 per ounce with many being tempted to purchase good quality metal detectors and other prospecting equipment hoping to strike it rich! However the most difficult part of gold prospecting is finding the right location to work. To overcome the problem any people are joining gold prospecting clubs because this allows them to use the club’s pegged areas where members have previously discovered gold.  There are also those who prefer to travel by themselves to remote potential gold bearing regions hoping to find new pockets of gold. One thing is certain – the location of rich finds are always kept a closely guarded secret!

Having done some preliminary research  you should generally choose areas  where previous prospectors have found gold. There are always tell-tale signs of old gold diggings such as mullock heaps and uneven ground at these locations. Other signs like rocks lying on the sides of gullies and creek beds and gullies are also likely evidence of previous prospecting activities.  It is also worth investigating old shafts and piles of quartz. Talking to people who live in these regions may also reveal worthwhile spots to check where others have previously been successful in finding some gold. One thing to be pointed out is that although an area may have been extensively worked over previously,  by using the latest high-tech metal detectors there is a high probability that you will find gold gold missed by others who used the earlier-model detectors.  These new hi-tech detectors with their ultra sensitive gold seeking features will often find tiny or deeper nuggets that the older older machine models weren’t capable of detecting.
There is a good possibility of finding gold nuggets in the mullock heaps of old diggings, so you should ensure that these are carefully and finding gold nuggets in Australiathoroughly gone over with your metal detector to maximize your chances of finding any nuggets missed by previous prospectors. However there is probably far more gold left in ground that hasn’t been worked over and this is where rich strikes can be made. Usually the prospector will need to gain more experience to recognize a good untapped location on which to prospect by searching for good indicators such as scattered quartz or deposits of ironstone or shale. It is advisable to search in the undisturbed ground in the immediate vicinity of these workings if the ground is still hard or rocky.  In the past this unworked ground may have been too poor for previous prospectors to mine, but may now prove to be more productive to you with armed with the latest in metal detecting technology such as detectors in the Minelab GPX  pulse induction series, which are ideally suited for Australian ground conditions.  This type of detector will penetrate the ground  deeply to find any gold that the old prospectors left behind.

Here is a State by State analysis of regions in which gold has been discovered in the past to assist you in finding gold nuggets in Australia:-

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

Western Australia, my home state, has one of the world’s largest gold bearing region covering an area of several thousand kilometers and extending from Mount Newman in the north of the state all the way down to Norseman near the south coast.  The area around Kalgoorlie is well known for the huge gold discoveries that occurred in the latter part of the 19th century and which continue even today from deep mining techniques carried out by large mining companies..Large amounts of alluvial gold have been found in the Pilbara area of the state and for part time prospectors there are still plenty of gold nuggets to be found.

Areas where gold has been found in this state include:- The Darling Ranges, Boddington, Donnybrook, Kalgoorlie, Norseman, Menzies, Leonora, Laverton, Wiluna, Leinster, Sandstone, Mount Magnet, Cue, Meekatharra, Cobra Station, Mount Newman, The Ashburton River, Karratha, Roebourne, Nullagine, Marble Bar, Halls Creek, Great Sandy Desert – Telfer and Ruby Plains.

VICTORIA

Victoria probably ranks second to Western Australia in relation to gold discoveries and  has produced some of the largest nuggets in Australia. As an example the “Welcome Stranger” was the largest gold nugget ever discovered, and was unearthed by two prospectors in 1869 at Moliagul, Victoria. At that time no scales were capable of weighing a such a large nugget, and so it was broken up into three pieces.

finding gold nuggets in AustraliaGoldfield areas in the state include Ararat, Stawell, Ballarat, Avoca, Dunolly, Wedderburn, Clunes, Bendigo, Rushworth, Castlemaine, Mansfield, Alexandra, Beechworth, Bonang, Bright, Benalla and Glen Willis.

Large nuggets are still being found in 2016 in Central Victoria by prospectors using metal detectors.

NEW SOUTH WALES

This was the state where gold was first officially discovered in Australia 1823 in Australia in 1823 near Bathurst. The news of the discovery was suppressed at the time by the Colony’s government to avoid disruption to the relatively small community. News of the finds were only proclaimed after people began leaving Australia to seek there fortunes elsewhere after heatrng of the Californian gold discoveries in 1848.

Gold bearing regions within the state include Tibabooburra, Broken Hill to Menindee, Cobar, Canbelego, West Wyalong, Temora, Young, Braidwood, Albury, Kianora, Eden, Bega, Gulgong, Mudgee, Hill End, Sofala, Bathurst, Nundle, Tamworth, Bingara, Armidale, Ullara and Drake.

QUEENSLAND

The first major gold rush in the state was in 1858 at Bonnie Doon Creek 35 miles north of Rockhampton. By 1860 some 40,000 ounces of gold had been discovered and there were over 16,000 people on this goldfield at its peak.

The gold regions within the state are are: Cloncurry, Georgetown, Forsayth, Croydon, Percyville, Wenlock, Cohen, Maytown, Palmer River, Charters Towers, Ravenswood, Mackay, Clermont, Rockhampton, Maryborough, Gympie and Stanthorpe.

NORTHERN TERRITORY

The first commercial goldfield in the NT was developed from 1871 in the Pine Creek region, where it has continued until the present day.

Gold regions within the state are: Adelaide River, Brookes Creek, Pine Creek, Wandi, Tanami, Rabbit Flat, The Granites, Tennant Creek and Arltunga.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Gold was first discovered in the state in 1846 at the Victoria mine near Castambul, City of Adelaide where a 12 ounce nugget was dug up. However it was not until 1852 that the first official gold rush commenced in the state  at  Euchunga in the Mount Lofty Ranges. The mine produced 3100 kgs of gold.

Goldfield areas within the state are: Euchunga, Barossa, Teetulpa, Tarcoola, Muckanpippie, Peake Diggings, Leigh Creek, Burra, Peterborough and Wadnaminga.

TASMANIA

Probably the most important gold find in Tasmania occurred in 1877, when  a rich bearing reef was discovered on the eastern side of Cabbage Tree Hill, Beaconsfield, This goldfield eventually became the Tasmania Gold Mine and produced 30 tons of gold up to 1914

Gold regions within the state are: Corinna, Moina, Queenstown, Urquhart, and Mainwaring Rivers, Beaconsfield, Lefroy, Lisle, Forrester, Gladstone, Fingal, Mathina and Cygnet.

FINAL NOTE

Make sure that you don’t prospect on mining tenements, national parks or other private property unless you have sought and obtained permission to search there. Any illegal activity on your part can spoil the pleasure of other part time gold prospectors if your actions cause a complete prospecting  ban being imposed by the land owners.

Want to prospect for gold but where do I look for finding gold?

The leisure activity of prospecting for gold with a metal detector and finding gold nuggets or even tiny flakes of gold has never been more popular and for a very good reason. With the precious metal hovering above $1600 an ounce it is no wonder people are investing big money to buy good metal detectors which will increase their chances of finding gold nuggets. A few small finds. from using a metal detector or from panning for gold, will probably pay for their equipment and leave them with a handsome profit!

finding gold

So the question is where do I start looking for this precious metal, which will obviously be different depending on which country you live in?

Let’s consider the U.S.A. A lot of people might think that you can only find gold in certain western parts of the country, like California, the state from which gold prospecting fortunes were made in 1849 by prospectors who struck it rich by finding gold nuggets. However the truth is that you can find gold, whether it be gold nuggets or flakes, in just about any  state in the country and becoming a part time gold prospector is a fairly simple hobby to learn and generally an inexpensive one.

Basically there are 3 different ways for part time prospectors to find gold in the U.S.A with some being more popular than others. It really is up to the individual prospector to choose the way he is more comfortable with.

CHOOSE A METHOD FROM THESE

1.. Using a metal detector for finding gold nuggets on dry land.

2. Panning for specks or flakes of gold in streams, rivers and creeks.

3. Searching for veins of gold in quartz rocky outcrops using a hammer, pick and chisel.

Of the three methods described above the first two are widely regarded as being the best for achieving good results.

CARRY OUT PROPER RESEARCH ON WHERE GOLD HAS BEEN FOUND

So having decided upon a method for finding gold nuggets or flakes you should now carry out some research to discover whether gold has actually been found in your state using metal detectors or from panning. Even if the history of your state shows that there have never been gold mines or even any gold deposits discovered it is well worth while checking to see whether there are any gold prospecting clubs close to home. The reason for this is that gold is generally widespread across the country and that river bed systems and former waterways are well worth prospecting, particularly using the panning method.

PURCHASE YOUR EQUIPMENT

If you intend to pan for gold go online and buy a simple beginner’s gold panning kit. These starter kits are generally very inexpensive costing less than a hundred dollars, and they have everything with which you need to get started. Such items as a plastic pan, vacuum sucker bottle, steel or plastic classifier, gold testing glass vial and even a helpful guide book on prospecting are generally included in the kit.

There is also a huge range of metal detectors that you can purchase on the Internet varying in price from a hundred dollars to several thousands. It is very advisable to carefully choose the type of  metal detector that you will need for the ground conditions that you will encounter in the areas to be prospected on for finding gold.

AMAZON is a great place for doing some research on the equipment you need to buy and to check other readers reviews of the products.

There are also some excellent books that can be purchased which give guidance on how to use the equipment. Check out this one called ‘Metal Detecting Secrets’

LEARN FROM OTHERS EXPERIENCE

The Internet is literally packed with information in the form of articles and videos on how other prospectors fared during their prospecting trips and you can generally pick up lots of useful tips from these sources. My favorite source is YouTube where you can learn from some excellent videos on the experiences other prospectors had when prospecting for gold on their trips. Here is one that I like relating to gold panning in Australia:-

Once you have done your research and selected a good location for finding gold, whether it is a creek, stream or old mining area to get started in, and have learned the basics about metal detector and panning techniques, it’s time to get started! Even though you may feel hyped up and confident of finding heaps of gold be realistic and don’t have too high expectations. Success in finding gold nuggets or gold  flakes on your first prospecting trip or even on subsequent ones can be difficult to achieve but you need to persevere and with the  experience gained you will eventually be rewarded by uncovering some valuable golden treasure!

Hope you enjoy a very successful prospecting trip!

Your Planning Guide To Finding Gold Nuggets With A Steel Detector.

The best method to finding bigger gold nuggets is to utilize a steel detector. Metal detectors need no water, so that they will work well in arid environments. They will also work near rivers or along rivers where gold deposits may be found upstream. Once you research the greatest potential areas for prospecting, you can easily use your steel detector to obtain a nice source of wealth underground. It is most important that you are properly prepared before you set off on a prospecting trip so here is a suggested planning guide for finding gold nuggets.

finding gold nuggets

A. Prepare adequately for the search

1. Learn the basic concepts concerning how to prospect for gold in appropriate mineral rich geographical areas.
2. Research diverse areas to discover where gold is placed across the world. Ask your national, state or provincial geological study site or workplace for information or maps.
3. Obtain the necessary permissions before going fossicking for gold nuggets on privately owned property or mining business land.
4. Look for finding gold nuggets in areas where gold discoveries have been made before. Because huge tracts of land have undoubtedly been prospected in the past, you will be unlikely to discover any new gold deposits but modern prospecting methods mean that you have a better chance of finding gold in these places that had previously been overlooked

B. Purchase a steel detector

1. Consider buying a high-frequency detector.

  • High-frequency detectors are usually are more sensitive to detecting gold, but they are also likely to give false positive readings  where there are iron deposits present.
  • Check out low-frequency detectors. Low-frequency detectors can screen out different base metals and can find larger gold deposits at larger depths.

2. Look for those that have automated ground balance controls.

These will regulate automatically based on the iron content in the stones, and you won’t need to regularly physically regulate the controls.

3. Choose a detector that shows the depth of the found object.

This will help you to know how far down you need to dig to retrieve the object.

finding gold nuggets

4. Purchase coils in numerous sizes.

  • Larger coils can find bigger items at elevated depths, while lighter coils will discover smaller objects at shallower depths.
  • Small coils are great for detecting deposits in bedrock while big coils are better at detecting nuggets hidden in tailing piles.Buy coils created for your unit of steel detector. Coils may not be interchangeable between models.

5. Buy a a set of top-quality headphones as a good set of headphones will:-

  • Deaden outside noise.
  • Enhance the weak sound signal produced when nuggets are located.
  • Have a volume control feature
  • Give options of using mono or stereo sound according to the sound output type of the detector being used.

C. Assembling and testing your Metal Detector

1. Assemble your metal detector by reading and following the manufacturer’s instructions.
2.Test it’s features at home in the following ways.

  • Don’t practice outside until you have fully understood the operational instructions contained in the manual.
  • Place a selection of different metal items such as bottle caps, can opener tags, coins, nails and a gold ring on a wooden table.
  • Run the coil of the  detector over each item to get an understanding of precisely how the detector will react to each of the metal objects scanned.

 D. Make Use Of Your Metal Detector in your hunt for Gold Nuggets

finding gold nuggets
1. Take your vehicle and gold detecting equipment to the area that you have chosen to prospect.
2. Move the metal detector’s coil from side-to-side in a sweeping motion low across the ground surface. Avoid sweeping in a pendulum motion which causes the coil to come high off the ground as this will be ineffective.Best results are achieved through sweeps low across the ground surface.
3. Carry out overlapping sweeps as you may miss out on finding small nuggets if you leave a gap between the swept areas.
4. Each gold find, no matter how trivial, should be regarded as an indicator of  the potential for further finds as gold rarely shows up as a isolated occurrence. Be prepared to dig more deeply if you find a small nugget as the chances are that there are others nearby waiting to be found!

E. Special Tips

  • To equip you with more options to maximize you chances of finding gold consider buying both a high-frequency and a low-frequency detector.
  • Be realistic with your expectations! Having a metal detector won’t enable you to find gold buried more than one foot beneath the surface and you have to be prepared for long periods of slow, repetitious and often hard digging work. However the rewards of finding gold nuggets make it all worth while!
  • Whenever you dig in an area always fill in the holes before leaving and remove any trash objects  that you dig up.

F. Be Warned!

Don’t prospect on mining tenements, national parks or other private property unless you have permission to search there. Any illegal activity on your part can spoil the pleasure of other gold prospector hobbyists if your actions cause a complete prospecting  ban being imposed by the land owners.

G. Summary Of Things You Need For Finding Gold Nuggets

  • Written permission to prospect
  • Steel detector
  • Coils in different sizes
  • Good quality headphones
  • Wood table
  • Metal items to train with like can opener tabs, bottle caps, nails, coins, and gold
